I am a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center, which I joined in 2003 after completing my PhD at Carnegie Mellon University. I'm currently one of the technical leaders for Virtual Mission Bus (VMB) project, which is an effort to develop a middleware system for supporting distributed, adaptive, hard real-time applications. In general, my research interests include: lightweight distributed consistency control, secure group membership protocols, and algorithms for automatic resource reservation and management.

I was a dietetic/nutrition educator. I worked at teaching hospitals/medical centers where I counsel patients and physicians directly. I also provided clinical nutrition education to medical interns and residents at these facilities. This experience led me to think that layman/professional alike, are much more educable if they had a balanced educational foundation from early on. The less educated people have lots of instincts, but get stuck when things become complex. Sometimes the highly educated folks are so loaded with book-knowledge that they lose their common sense.
In the past 20 years, I have been involved in the Kumon Method of self-pacing and self-learning of mathematics and reading. The curricula span from pre-school through AP high school material. The levels of work are individualized to ability, not to age and grade as in school. While advancing through the curriculum at their own pace to self-learn the contents, students develop good skills and learning habits at home. They feel truly independence and confident because everything is achieved through their own effort. They become free thinkers who also have a solid character who will always perform at their full potential! They will thrive, be creative and productive in any environment.
I am curious to find out, from the seminar, if this kind of early preparation from the home front can help fill in the gaps that schools create because of their inability to cater to each student’s individuality!
